It’s a clash of the two top teams in NWSL that no one saw coming. While it’s still early days in the 2021 season, the Spirit are putting points on the board despite being a work in progress and the Orlando Pride are riding an improved defense and an offense firing on all cylinders to the top of the league.

Well, that didn’t go as planned! After a changed location, a soft red card for their captain, and what could be charitably called…unpredictable refereeing, the Washington Spirit snuck out of BBVA Stadium with all three points and their first win of the season.

An evenly matched game in Orlando ended in the most logical way possible, with the Spirit taking the lead late in the 77th minute via an Ashley Hatch header and conceding the equalizer via Alex Morgan shortly after in the 84th minute with the Spirit and Coach Richie Burke both feeling like it was 2 points lost rather than one point earned.
