DC United 0-1 Austin FC | Week 2 2026

The good vibes from Opening Day lasted exactly one week.
DC United fell 1-0 to Austin FC on the road in Week 2 of the 2026 MLS season, dropping their first points under Renée Wilder and reopening every question the home opener win had temporarily answered. Jon and Ted are back on RFK Refugees to work through it — what went wrong, what Wilder was actually trying to do, and whether this loss tells us anything real about this team.
Their verdict: maybe, but the Eastern Conference is also an absolute mess right now. DC United are still in playoff position. It could be worse.

The Lineup Decision
Wilder made two significant changes from the Philly win: Jared Stroud came in for Jackson Hopkins, and Hosei Kijima replaced Gabriel Pirani, with Pirani sliding up alongside Tai Baribo up top. Most notably, Caden Clark wasn’t even on the bench — Gavin Turner took that spot instead, which raised eyebrows given how much Wilder talked up Clark’s acquisition.
The numbers told the story quickly. Kijima completed three passes in the first half. Stroud generated almost nothing going forward. Jackson Hopkins, by comparison, led the league in successful dribbles in Week 1 with 11 and posted it on his Instagram story. The drop-off was visible.
What Wilder Was Going For
In his postgame press conference, Wilder was blunt: he wanted to get to halftime at 0-0 in the Austin heat, then try to steal something in the second half. He got the first part right. The second part didn’t happen — the goal came from a set piece, which he acknowledged Austin are dangerous at, and which he said he knew was the most likely way they’d concede.
Jon and Ted debated whether that kind of pragmatism is sustainable. The concern isn’t just the result — it’s what it suggests about how Wilder views this team’s attacking ceiling. If the plan going into a mid-table Austin side is to park the bus and hope, what does the plan look like against Miami or Atlanta?
The Bright Spots
Matti Peltola and Silvan Hefti were the only two players Jon and Ted felt genuinely positive about. Both are defensive by nature, which says something about the overall shape of the day. Sean Johnson made some elite stops when called upon, though his commanding of crosses continues to be a talking point — two fumbles against Philly, some hesitancy here, and an aging goalkeeper who may need to adjust his game slightly to compensate.
Tai Baribo worked hard, pressed, tracked back on one key defensive moment, and was visibly frustrated by the lack of service. Totally understandable.
The Louis Munteanu Question
Munteanu came on in the 77th minute for 13 minutes — fewer than his ~20-minute cameo against Philly. The clock is ticking. Ted predicts he gets his first start against Inter Miami in Baltimore. Jon thinks maybe Chicago the week after. Either way, both hosts agree it has to happen soon. You can’t spend what DC United spent on a player and have him logging 13-minute cameos through the first month of the season without questions getting louder.
Eastern Conference Reality Check
The saving grace: the East is a disaster. Montreal lost 5-0 to San Diego and opened with a -8 goal differential. Atlanta are underperforming. Toronto got blown out 3-0 by Vancouver. Philly had a heartbreaker against NYCFC. Orlando not looking sharp. DC United, despite the loss, are sitting in playoff position two games in.
“It could be worse” is not a rallying cry, but it is a real observation.
Be More United — In Baltimore
The upcoming Inter Miami match is being played at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore under the “Be More United” branding, complete with Wale performing at halftime. Jon and Ted flagged that DC United have reportedly been deleting critical comments on their posts about the game, which both hosts called out directly. The fix, as Jon put it, is simple: win games. The admin problems solve themselves.
